Cops hold gardening plumber for growing ‘grass’

BALIK PULAU: The 22-year-old plumber had a penchant for gardening. But there was more to it than green fingers and the man landed on the wrong side of the law.

Police detained him for having seven plants believed to be cannabis during a raid at his rented kampung house in Sungai Pinang here at 5.45pm on Thursday.

Balik Pulau OCPD Supt Mohd Hatta Mohd Zain said the suspect was staying alone in the house for the last four months.

“The raiding party from the state Narcotics Department seized seven pots of the plants inside his house.

“The plants are around two months old. We also found a plastic packet containing resin and seeds,” he said.

Supt Mohd Hatta said the man was remanded for a week at the Balik Pulau magistrate’s court here yesterday.

He said it was not certain whether the plants were being grown for his own use or for sale.

“The man, who is single, has tested positive for drugs and has no criminal record,” he said.

Supt Mohd Hatta said the plants would be sent to the lab for analysis.

If they were confirmed to be ganja plants, the man will be charged under Section 6(B) of the Dangerous Drugs Act for cultivating the plants, he said.

He said a one-year-old ganja plant can produce about 200g of leaves.

“Anyone caught having that amount of ganja, can be charged under Section 39(B) of the Dangerous Drugs Act, which carries the mandatory death sentence,” Supt Mohd Hatta said.
