Ritah... u're rite. checked out Tropical Fruit Farm, and they are out of durian. Didn't see much near Bao Sheng Orchard either. Ended up having some near Teluk Bahang, on the road side a bit north of Tropical Fruit Farm -- damn expensive from RM10 to RM30 each. (If I remember correctly, about RM12 per kg).

Late last year, they were selling like RM1-2 each! Until then, then...

  4. I just returned from holiday in Penang few days ago. For the first time in 15 yrs, i ate durians again! I stopped eating 'cos i hated the smell... but i must say, Balik Pulau's durians don't smell too bad, and tastes pretty good!

You're right about it being expensive, hubby & i paid RM12 for 1 durian... =P
And according to his uncle who owns a fruit orchard, there are very few durians this season.

Anyway, I actually really wanted to ask about this beach called Pantai Pasir Panjang in Balik Pulau... do you know if there's a way to get there, or a resort nearby there? Is it a nice long stretch of beach?

    Dear Yanz,

Pantai Pasir Panjang is next to "Kampung Pasir Panjang" (you can use Google Maps to locate this) on the left-side of southwest bay of the island, and is reachable thru a small and a seashore zig-zagging road from Kampung Pulau Betong.

Kpg Pulau Betong is situated next to the tiny, actual Betong Island.

From Kongsi Town (the main town, centre of Balik Pulau), just follow south through either Jalan Bharu or Jalan Balik Pulau (main road), but make sure you DO NOT make any left turn towards Bukit Genting -- Just follow straight, southwest bound instead.

Here's a photo of the beach:
    http://www.panoramio.com/photo/1554072

    And the map:
    http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=kampung+pasir+panjang&sll=5.299041,100.188789&sspn=0.02205,0.029182&ie=UTF8&ll=5.306348,100.188789&spn=0.022049,0.029182&z=15&iwloc=A

You can use GPS to plug in those coordinates too. And Google Earth software can show it a very clear satellite view of the entire beach.

As you'd discover, the beach stretch is about the length of Pantai Kerechut (reachable through an hour trekking from Teluk Bahang on the northwest) and obviously is not as long as Batu Feringghi etc, but these two beaches on the island are very isolated, much cleaner and quite breezy.

The beach is a bit quiet on weekdays, but receives quite a number of visitors on weekends. So, for safety, it's a good idea to check it out on weekends, or bring a large group of people.

Clearly, unlike Batu Feringghi and Teluk Bahang that are full of hotels and resorts, you won't find anything similar close to either Pantai Pasir Panjang or Pantai Kerechut. There are however some some resort facility I believe (or under heavy constructions), near Gertak Sanggol, some 15-minute drive away.

Enjoy your next trip to BP!
