Taman Seri Aksiden

Terjun Gaung Puaka

By K. KASTURI DEWI

BALIK PULAU: Two brothers narrowly escaped death when a Honda VTEC they were travelling in ran off the main road and plunged down a steep slope in Paya Terubong.

The brothers, both in their 20s, were believed to be on their way back to their house in here when they apparently lost control of the vehicle along Jalan Paya Terubong in the 3.30am incident Sunday.

A witness said the car whirled a few times before hitting an electric pole and plunged down the slope nearly 30 metres.

The witness also said the electric pole which was hit by the car fell onto the road, causing about six motorcycles to stumble.

However, no motorcyclists were injured.

Passers-by helped the driver who had fractured his arm and his brother who had sustained minor injuries out of the vehicle.

They were sent to the Penang Hospital in an ambulance.

Concerns on Penang hillside projects recorded

GEORGE TOWN: The Penang government will take preventive measures including issuing stop-work orders for hillside developments in the wake of the landslide tragedy that killed at least three people at Bukit Antarabangsa, Selangor, early Saturday morning.

Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng said on Saturday he would personally request Penang Municipal Council president Datuk Zainal Rahim Seman view and inspect the hillside areas again, especially those in Batu Ferringhi.

“About three to four months ago, the council had issued stop-work orders against developers of five hillside projects for failing to comply with certain conditions imposed by the council.

“That order was recently lifted after the developers concerned had carried out remedial works on the land,’’ he told reporters at a press conference after the two-day “New Economic Vision for Penang and Malaysia’’ international forum here.

He was commenting on the landslide tragedy at Bukit Antarabangsa which left three dead and 15 people injured (as of 3pm Saturday).

Lim expressed shock over the incident and extended his condolences to those who had lost their family members in the tragedy.

He said so far there have been no other problems concerning hillside development projects in Penang but “this doesn’t mean there won’t be any’’.

He said the issue was not about landslides occurring at hillslopes but what was important was achieving sustainable development, which was to use resources in a manner that it would still be available in the future.

“Achieving sustainable development should be the benchmark in any development that takes place,’’ he said.

Zainal Rahim when contacted said the council’s inspection included hillsides where no development was taking place.

“The council inspects all hillside development projects and hilly areas including those in Balik Pulau and Teluk Kumbar every week without fail and a report is submitted to the Chief Minister,’’ he said.

He added that at the moment, the development at hillsides were under control and developers were complying with the council’s conditions.

“If any developer is found to have flouted any condition, a stop-work order is issued immediately until they take remedial measures such as taking care of the slope or building a retention pond is done,’’ he said.

Zainal Rahim said the council also wrote letters to owners of hilly lands to notify them of any irregularities on their land.

Girl, 13: 'Saya Sayang Dia' (I love him - Boy, 17)

'Love' supposedly brought a 13-year old girl from a remote town in Pulau Pinang, Malaysia to a remote Lamaraya Island (Southeast of Pulau Sulawesi, Indonesia!

And she's finally back to home to Balik Pulau ('return to the island', literally ;0). Read on the news articles below:-

BALIK PULAU, Jan 25 (Bernama) -- A 13-year-old girl who went missing here last month was found safe on a remote island in Sulawesi Tenggara, Indonesia, on Sunday.

Maslina Siadin was found safe in Pulau Lamaraya by her father, Siadin Rashid, 44, who had spent over a month looking for her.

The Form One student of Sekolah Menengah Seri Balik Pulau was believed to have been abducted by an Indonesian from her house in Kampung Pondok Upeh.

"Thank God she was found safe and has returned home," Siadin told reporters here Friday.

Maslina was reported missing between 6.30pm and 7.30pm on Dec 16 last year. She left home alone and did not return.

Siadin said that after news of Maslina's disappearance hit the newspapers, two men told him that she had been abducted by a man who had worked as a labourer in the area.

He lodged a police report on Jan 10 and, with the help of police and Balik Pulau Member of Parliament Datuk Seri Hilmi Yahaya, approached the Indonesian embassy in Penang for assistance.

On Jan 17, Siadin and his brother, Jalil Rashid, 50, an immigration officer, left for Jakarta to track down Maslina.

From Jakarta they took an eight-hour flight to Kendari, the nearest airport to Pulau Lamaraya.

"On arrival, we took a three-hour taxi ride to the interior and were told by the local authority that Maslina and a man had been detained at the Sulawesi Tenggara police station.

"We went straight to the station where a confused Maslina rushed and hugged me crying."

Siadin said they had to do some hard bargaining with the Indonesian immigration and police before they could bring her home on Tuesday.

"Maslina had entered Indonesia illegally at Tanjong Pinang, Riau, and then took a one-week boat trip to reach Pulau Lamaraya," he added.

Looking still confused, Maslina declined to be interviewed by reporters.

"She will only cry when asked where she had gone to as she is still confused and did not know what had happened," Siadin said.

Hilmi, who was present at Siadin's house, said he was happy to see that the episode had come to a happy ending.

"We must always be careful and not to trust people easily especially foreigners," he said.

No permit for show

By BERNARD SEE

PENANG, Thursday April 12, 2007: A Wayang Kadboard or cardboard shadow play to be held this weekend in George Town and Balik Pulau is not an endorsed event under Visit Malaysia 2007.

Penang Tourism Development Committee chairman Teng Chang Yeow said the show was not part of any VM2007 programme, adding that there was no request from the non-government organisations organising the show to use the logo.

Flyers advertising the show entitled Tragedi Kg Berembang have been distributed to the public over the past few days and they carry a VM2007 logo with a hibiscus motif.

Although the show has been described as a cultural event, police have warned those who attend the play that they would be participating in an illegal gathering.

George Town OCPD Asst Comm Azam Abd Hamid said the show organisers did not apply for a police permit to hold the shows at Weld Quay and the Balik Pulau public library.

“The organisers should cancel the show as they can be arrested under the Police Act for organising a gathering without a permit if the show goes ahead as planned.

“They should have submitted an application to the police. We always try to be fair when approving such permits,” he said yesterday.

ACP Azam warned that those who"
